The base dataset comes from public research by @0xvietnguyen on X, who tracked and compiled crypto project shutdowns through 2026 — project names, shutdown dates, and a link to each announcement.

Cross-referenced sources
The registry is expanded against RootData's 2026 Crypto Dead Projects List. Every project added from it was individually researched to confirm the shutdown date and locate a real announcement — entries that could not be verified were left out rather than listed on trust.

Additions, verification & maintenance
On top of those sources, @lain_calvo built this site and keeps the registry going: adding new shutdowns as they happen, categorizing every project, and linking each entry back to its original announcement.
How entries are sourced. Most link to the project's own announcement — an X post, a blog post, a governance forum thread. Where no primary announcement could be found, the entry links to press coverage instead and is tagged Press coverage, so you always know what kind of source you are reading. A handful announced a shutdown with no archivable link; those are marked Link not archived.
How the reason is decided. A shutdown reason is an interpretation, not a hard fact — a project may say "strategic decision" when it in fact ran out of money. The tag reflects what the source says; the one-line note carries the nuance. Where no reason was stated anywhere, the entry is marked Not reported rather than guessed. Figures are only included when a source states them explicitly.
